User Defined Groups: Virtual Category

User-defined groups let you create your own virtual category by letting you group together indicators from different categories. This is a useful feature as it lets you save a set of indicators that you use often in analysis thus saving you time from having to select each individual one every time you run a report.

Create a User-Defined Group

  1. On the sub-menu click the User Group icon.

  2. Select the indicators you wish to include in your user-defined group using the same steps you follow when creating an advanced report.

  3. In the Group Name text box enter the name of your user-defined group.

  4. At the bottom of the window click Add to create your user-defined group.

  5. The system advises operation complete and ask if you want to share virtual category.

  • If you click No, message window closes and new indicator displays in indicator tree.

  • If you click Yes, the Share Virtual Category window displays list of current GIS users in your company. Select the users you'd like to share virtual category with and click OK. When the Your Virtual Category sharing rules have been updated message displays click OK.

NOTE:  Only the owner of the category will be able to edit or delete virtual category. Virtual categories for which you are not the owner appear with this icon .

Use a Virtual Category

Virtual Categories can be used in all the mapping modules and in MDx Reports.

To access in the map modules follow these steps:

  1. In the Indicator tree find the User Defined database and click to expand.

  2. Expand Virtual Categories grouping.

  3. Then expand the appropriate group you created.

  4. Choose the Indicator(s) you want to include in your report or map.

In MDx Reports Find Virtual Indicators by:

  1. Scroll to bottom of categories list.

  2. Expand User Defined grouping.

  3. Expand Virtual Categories.

  4. Expand the sub category of the appropriate group you created.

  5. Select the Indicator you want to include in your report .

Edit a User-Defined Group

  1. In the Indicator tree find the User Defined database and click to expand.

  2. Expand Virtual Categories grouping.

  3. Then expand the appropriate group you created.

  4. Add or remove indicators from the user defined group as needed. Once the list of indicators has been selected, click Update to save the updated list of indicators to match those in Selected Indicator(s).

    If the Update button is not visible simply reselect your user defined group.

Share User-Defined Group

To share a previously created virtual group:

  1. In the Indicator tree find the User Defined database and click to expand.

  2. Expand Virtual Indicators grouping.

  3. Choose the Virtual Group you want to share.

  4. Right click and from the Context Menu select Share Virtual Categories.

  5. The Share Virtual Category window displays list of current GIS users in your company. Select the users you'd like to share virtual category with and click OK. When the Your Virtual Category sharing rules have been updated message displays click OK.

    NOTE:  Only the owner of the category will be able to edit or delete virtual category. Virtual categories for which you are not the owner appear with this icon .

To Delete a User-Defined Group

  1. In the Indicator tree find the User Defined database and click to expand.

  2. Expand Virtual Categories grouping.

  3. Choose the user-defined group you want to delete.

  4. Click the Delete button to delete the user-defined group.
